Reflexology a brief history; ancient healing through to the 1900's, up to modern day, what to expect and the benefits...
...modern reflexology stems from ancient healing therapies as far back as 5000BC. Evidence shows foot and hand therapy being practised in India, China and Egypt, as shown here in the tomb of Ankmahor. Native Americans practised foot therapy for hundreds of years.
Through to the 1900's a snapshot
Zone therapy existed as early as the 1580's! But it's not until 1917 that Dr. W. Fitzgerald is attributed with rediscovering Zone Therapy. Dividing the body into 10 zones to show connection between pressure and pain relief in unrelated body parts. An article published in 1915, “To stop that toothache, squeeze your toe” by E. Bowers, led Dr. Fitzgerald to publish 'Zone Therapy, relieving pain at home'. NB: the Chinese had divided the human body into longitudinal meridians as early as 2500BC.
The modern day...
..'Mother' of reflexology is Eunice Ingham, practising c.1930's. She picked up Zone Therapy and ran with it, clocking up thousands of case studies, meticulously mapping out every organ and system of the body onto what we now regard as the modern day foot map. A pioneer, she wrote two infamous books, founded the International Institute of Reflexology, and devised specific practical techniques still used today. Her legacy continues through the development of this fabulous treatment.
What to expect...
Water is readily available, my therapy space is warm and comfortable. We start with a chat and a medical consultation. The ‘investigatory’ treatment provides an overall assessment of your reflexes, specific to you and your feet. How they feel, look and respond and which areas may need a little more attention relating to your medical consultation. You will need to remove your shoes/socks/tights and be seated in a reclining chair with a blanket. I use a firm yet gentle pressure with organic wax.
Some reflex points may feel alittle tender during the treatment, please advise me. Responses to treatment are individual and aftercare advice around healing responses is offered. We can talk about how often you may want to come based on findings from the treatment. Your bespoke treatment plan will be discussed. It is suggested that 4 – 6 once weekly treatments for acute issues is ideal and possibly longer for chronic conditions with the aim towards maintenance appointments or non requirement.
Generally people feel elated or relaxed. Your body innately knows what it needs and takes it. It's a wonderful exchange of energy between client and therapist. Reflexology may help to alleviate certain common conditions such as; Hypertension, Digestion issues, Headaches or migraines, Sleep patterns, Hormone imbalances, Painful & Inflammatory Conditions, Backpain, Sciatica, Stress, Anxiety.
